While it is hard for a blood washed, bible toting, baptized AME to imagine viewing this production outside of a Christian lens, Syracuse Stage’s festive production of Godspell takes us around the world and back again. It is an expression of global faith traditions and an affirmation of God’s presence in the world, to the faithful, – no matter what you call him.I can’t recall ever going to see Godspell on Broadway. However, I found myself wanting to sing along to every song. I knew them all. Somehow, the music is etched into my memory as are the parables whimsically performed.
The music is enduring…whether or not you are hearing it for the first time or you are recalling scenes from your high school production. You’ll wake up humming “Day by Day”, if not singing “Prepare ye, the way of the Lord” full bore. If you don’t sing, the ensemble vocals will make you think that you can. The production is at times visually stunning. There are moments on stage with JC that will surely treat your soul.
Pre-curtain accoutrements include a World Market Place in the Coyne Lobby for the shoppers among us and entertainment by the Pink Ladies, a bellydancing organization that performs to create awareness about breast cancer. There is truly someting for everyone in the family.
Come out and enjoy.
